Retainers

The day our patients get their braces removed is often a very exciting and emotional one. However, orthodontic care is not over once braces are removed. Retainers are necessary to hold teeth in their proper position while the gums, ligaments and bones adapt to their new positioning. For our post-brace-face patients, we offer the following types of retainers:

Invisible Retainer
Clear, or invisible retainers are ideal for the more cosmetically minded patients, as they have no metal or wires. The invisible retainer is a transparent removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of the teeth. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, invisible retainers are very easy to wear and are a very affordable options for our patients.

Hawley Retainer
The most common type of retainer, the Hawley retainer, is a removable retainer  made of metal wires and sturdy acrylic. Hawley retainers are designed to maintain the width of the upper arch and are specially made from impressions of the teeth, providing a snug and comfortable fit in the roof of your mouth. The advantage of using this type of retainer is that it can be adjusted to finish your treatment plan and continue with moving your teeth as your Orthodontist sees fit. The acrylic can be personalized with color, and our practice offers an array of fun colors and patterns for you to choose from!

Fixed Retainers
Fixed retainers, bonded lingual retainers, or behind the teeth retainers, are cemented on the inside surface of the upper and lower front six teeth. Thefixed retainers ensure full time wear and are one of the best preventative methods for shifting teeth as they are permanently attached. While using the fixed retainers the only thing you will need to worry about is making sure to brush and floss really well in the area around the retainer.
